Level 2 SIA Trainer Certification

The Level 2 certification is the foundation level trainer qualification offered by the SIA. It covers the basics of training delivery, preparing session plans, using training aids, and assessing learners.

Some key facts about Level 2:

  • Focuses on fundamental training skills and knowledge
  • Requires completion of a 5-day Level 2 course
  • Course covers Units 1-3 of the Level 3 content
  • Open to those aged 18+ with no prior qualifications required
  • Allows training delivery for non-licensable SIA courses only

To be eligible, you simply need to be over 18 and undergo basic background checks. The Level 2 course will equip you with skills like:

  • Delivering informative and engaging training sessions
  • Creating lesson plans and structuring effective training
  • Using audiovisual aids and presentation tools
  • Providing feedback through questioning and assessments
  • Understanding awarding body administration

With a Level 2 certificate, you can deliver training for:

  • Non-licensable SIA security awareness courses
  • In-house training programs
  • Other general security skills courses

So this qualification focuses on introductory training abilities. It’s ideal for those starting out as trainers gaining hands-on classroom experience before progressing.

Level 3 SIA Trainer Certification!

The Level 3 certification is the advanced trainer qualification from the SIA, covering more complex training delivery. It allows you to teach licence-linked qualifications required for frontline security roles.

Some key facts about Level 3:

  • Covers advanced training techniques and assessment methods
  • Requires completion of a 10-day Level 3 course
  • Course covers all Units 1-5 of the full syllabus
  • Open to those with at least 100 hours of active training in the past 3 years
  • Allows training delivery for SIA licence-linked qualifications
  • Recognised as equivalent to the Level 3 Award in Education and Training

To be eligible for Level 3, you must be over 18 and have delivered at least 100 hours of training in the past 3 years. You also need Industry Specification for Learning and Development (ISLD) approval. The Level 3 course equips you with skills like:

  • Delivering licence-linked qualifications for security roles
  • Advanced session planning and training techniques
  • Competently assessing learners and quality assuring training
  • Understanding the legal requirements of regulated qualifications
  • Embedding employability skills into teaching
  • Identifying individual learning needs

With a Level 3 certificate, you can deliver training for:

  • SIA licence-linked qualifications, e.g. door supervision, CCTV operations
  • Close protection, security guarding, and other licensable courses
  • Specialist security skills training at a higher level

So this qualification focuses on expert-level training abilities for regulated security qualifications. It allows credible, professional delivery of licence-linked training critical for frontline security staff.

Key Differences Between the Levels!

While both certifications cover core training skills, there are some important distinctions between Level 2 and Level 3:

  • Level 2 focuses on introductory skills for general courses, while Level 3 covers advanced expertise for regulated qualifications.
  • Level 2 requires a 5-day course, while Level 3 involves a longer 10-day course and assessment.
  • Level 2 has open eligibility, while Level 3 requires prior active training experience.
  • Level 2 allows delivery of awareness-level courses only, Level 3 enables training for licence-linked qualifications.
  • Level 2 teaches basic training techniques, while Level 3 covers complex assessment methods.
  • Level 3 is recognised as equivalent to the Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

So in summary, Level 2 gives a solid baseline of training knowledge, while Level 3 takes skills to an industry-leading standard recognised by employers. The choice depends on your current ability and career aspirations as a security trainer.

Which Level Is Right for My Security Training Career?

When deciding which level to pursue, think about your existing expertise and the types of courses you want to deliver:

  • For those completely new to training, the Level 2 certification is recommended as your entry point to build confidence and basic skills before specialising further.
  • If you have some experience already but want to focus on general security awareness training, the Level 2 will reinforce good practice and broaden your knowledge.
  • For experienced trainers looking to deliver licence-linked qualifications, the Level 3 certification is essential to provide advanced skills and meet legal requirements.
  • If you want to progress into training management, assessor or verifier roles, the Level 3 certificate can stand out on your CV while expanding your capabilities.
  • Ultimately, many trainers obtain both over time, starting at Level 2 and utilising it to then reach the Level 3 standard and maximise career opportunities.

So evaluate your current expertise, training goals and topics you want to teach. This will indicate if the Level 2 or Level 3 SIA trainer qualification is a better match to help take the next step.
